Since its inception in 2021, the Green Ghana Day initiative has seen remarkable success, with 42 million trees planted across the nation, as announced by Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor.
The initiative, aimed at fostering a greener environment, has gained significant momentum, with plans to add millions more trees during this year's Green Ghana Day, slated for June 7.
During the launch event for the 2024 Green Ghana Day in Tamale on Tuesday, April 16, Minister Jinapor stressed the importance of collective effort in ensuring the success of the initiative.
The Damongo MP called on all citizens to actively participate in tree-planting activities to further advance environmental conservation efforts.
With an ambitious target of planting an additional 10 million trees this year, Mr Jinapor highlighted the importance of citizen engagement and collaboration in achieving this goal.
The Minister emphasised the transformative impact that each tree planted can have on mitigating climate change and enhancing biodiversity.
“I am happy and proud to report that in the last three years of its implementation, some 42 million trees have been planted across the country in both on and off reserves, consistently exceeding our targets every year. And these have been verified by independent audit.
“This is truly impressive. I want to use this opportunity to on behalf of the President of the Republic, thank all Ghanaians and all residents of Ghana who have supported us over the years to achieve this feat.”
