Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has underscored the critical role of global cooperation in the fight against economic crime.
In his address, Dame called on key actors worldwide to unite against the growing menace of financial crime, noting that the theme of the conference highlights the importance of the forum as a platform for strengthening international collaboration.
Reflecting on the conference theme, Dame stated, "The motivation for financial and economic crime is often the acquisition of illicit wealth and securing of undue advantage.
“Effectively tracing the assets of suspects and recovering the proceeds of crime nips the motive for such crimes in the bud."
He stated that asset tracing is essential in tackling economic and financial crime, describing it as the "end game" for law enforcement.
"Apart from being simply unconscionable for perpetrators of economic crime to conceal or keep the fruits of their crimes, for the relatively less developed world, such as Ghana, the phenomenon breeds mistrust in the system and denies the nation much-needed revenue for development projects," Dame remarked.
He further elaborated that the drive to recover assets obtained through criminal enterprises places law enforcement agencies in a crucial position to contribute significantly to national development.
"A success in this regard makes them a major generator of revenue," Dame added, highlighting the dual role of law enforcement in both upholding justice and supporting economic growth.
The Attorney General’s speech served as a rallying call for more effective global partnerships and cooperation in addressing the pervasive issue of economic crime, which affects nations both rich and poor, developed and developing, and those that are both investors and recipients of foreign direct investment.
