Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, the Vice Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, to stop criticizing traditional and religious leaders, including chiefs, imams, and pastors.
The advice is in response to Mr Mahama’s recent comments, where he expressed dissatisfaction with these leaders for their perceived support of the NPP instead of holding the government accountable.
Speaking during a campaign rally in the Ofoase Juaben constituency on Thursday, NAPO suggested that Mr Mahama's criticisms stem from frustration.
He argued that rather than engaging in constructive discourse, Mr Mahama has chosen to target these leaders because they have shown support for the NPP, particularly in response to calls for prayers and blessings for the party.
NAPO further emphasised that these religious and traditional figures are not political players, and their role is to offer prayers and guidance to all, regardless of political affiliation.
He noted that Mahama's frustration should not be directed at leaders who are merely fulfilling their spiritual and community responsibilities.
The NPP Vice Presidential Candidate concluded by calling for respectful dialogue in the political space, urging Mr Mahama to focus on issues that matter to Ghanaians instead of criticizing respected figures in society.
He emphasised that the upcoming election should be about policies and the future of the country, not personal attacks on religious and traditional leaders.
“Mr Mahama has realised that the NDC has no chance of winning the presidential and parliamentary elections, so he (Mahama) has directed his frustration and anger to innocent people. John Mahama shouldn’t turn his frustration on chiefs, the clergy, imams, and others because they have not offended him."
"John Mahama knows that the battle ahead of him and his NDC is arduous, so he is picking quarrels with chiefs, imams, and pastors for no reason," he said.
