With about two months before the December general elections, Ghana is facing mounting labor unrest with key labour groups on strike.
The Senior Staff Association of Public Universities, the Ghana Association of University Administrators, and the Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU) have already laid down their tools, protesting unresolved allowance issues.
Adding to this wave of dissatisfaction is the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana, CETAG which is set to resume its strike next week, just after ending the longest industrial action in their history.
- They are citing government’s failure to honor their agreement.

A spokesperson for CETAG, Dominic Owusu said: “ It is so surprising that the government has gone back to sleep and there is no peace with the dragging of feet with the implementation of the arbitrary awards. As I speak, most of the agreements signed on August 19 have been violated.
“If our calls and demands are not heeded, then there will be a full-blown strike next week,” he said.
Additionally, Mortuary Workers are joining the fray, heightening the pressure on the government.
In a statement, they indicated that the strike would begin on Thursday, September 26 in demand of the following: provision of adequate personal protective equipment, salary arrears dating back to 2020, request for financial clearance for the employment of just 500 Mortuary Workers, and covid bonus.

Meanwhile, the Senior Staff Association of Public Universities strike continues unabated with executives contemplating a full-blown strike if government fails to heed their calls to attend to their allowances.
“It is quite unfortunate there is no response so far, we are still expecting that they will call us but if they fail to call, we will also continue to sit at home. Maybe our next plan of action is to do a total shutdown,” said the President of the Association, Isaac Donkor.
