The acting Director of the Information Services Department (ISD), Dr Nafisa Mahama has called for the institution of an ethical framework to govern the rapid deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the digital spaces of every country.
Dr Mahama said the rapid deployment of AI tools must be consistent with essential ethical frameworks that are grounded in human rights principles.
The acting ISD Director of the ISD made these known when she delivered a speech at the ministerial side event of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79) on September 23 in New York, US.
Dr Mahama delivered a speech on the topic "AI for Humanity: Charting the Global Course for Human Rights-Based Governance: Ghana's Commitment to Ethical AI Governance and Innovation".
Dr Mahama observed that while the recent rapid advancement of AI technology presents remarkable opportunities to drive human well-being and sustainable development, it is imperative to address its inherent risks.
As a strong advocate for digital rights in Africa, Ghana is among the comity of nations that are embracing the development of AI tools for enhancing lives across various sectors of the economy.
Owing to this, Dr Mahama disclosed that Ghana is actively developing a comprehensive AI governance framework such as an "AI-enhanced online application system designed to facilitate public access to information across all government sectors.
"Such initiative reflects our belief that AI must be used to foster inclusive governance and empower citizens" she stated.
The ISD director assured that Ghana’s ongoing investments in AI will continue to be rooted in ethical considerations and human rights to position the country as a leader in the responsible and innovative use of AI technology.
