RISE-Ghana joins the global community in observing the International Day of the Girl, themed "Girls' Vision for the Future. This aligns with our commitment to empowering girls and advocating for their rights.
According to data from UNICEF, there are about 122 million girls who are out of school -34 million of primary school age, and 87 millions of secondary school age.
There has been progress in championing girls education: about two thirds of all countries around the world have reached gender parity in primary school enrolment. But it's the completion rates- that illustrate just how far we have to go.
In low-income countries, 63%of female students complete primary school, compared to 67 percent for male students. The gap widens for secondary school students: while 43% of boys finish high school, just 38% of girls do.
We recognize girls' potential to positively influence their future and that of their communities and the world. However, we are mindful of the obstacles they face, such as limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
At RISE-Ghana, we believe every girl deserves the opportunity to pursue her dreams. We are dedicated to advocating for policies and initiatives that prioritize girls' education and empowerment, supporting programs that enhance their well-being, and providing platforms for them to express their aspirations.
We urge stakeholders to collaborate in empowering girls to emerge as leaders, innovators, and catalysts for change.
As we commemorate the International Day of the Girl, we appeal to all Ghanaians to listen to girls' voices, invest in their education and skill development, and safeguard their rights. Let us strive towards a future where girls can flourish and shape a better world for all.
Signed
Alhaji Ahmed Awal Kariama , Executive Director of RISE-Ghana
