Eight travelers have tragically lost their lives after gunmen blocked the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale, and opened fire.
The violent incident unfolded on Sunday when the assailants set up roadblocks in both Gbimsi and Walewale Town, stopping vehicles to identify potential targets.
According to reports, passengers caught in the blockade were subjected to interrogation regarding their identities.
In this deadly confrontation, eight people were killed, and two vehicles were set ablaze, raising significant security concerns in the region. The situation highlights the ongoing instability affecting travellers and residents alike.
A survivor recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “I was traveling from Sunyani to Paga. Upon reaching Walewale, people had mounted roadblocks and were searching for individuals to kill. The incident lasted for more than an hour, yet security did not respond.”
This account underscores the fear and chaos experienced during the attack, as well as frustrations regarding the lack of timely intervention from security forces.
The attack is believed to be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict, which has resurfaced after a period of relative peace.
The escalating violence along this critical route has raised alarm among residents and travellers, prompting calls for increased security measures to protect those using the highway.
In response to the rising tensions, the Ghana Police Service has assured travellers that they will increase their security presence along the highway in the coming days.
The police have acknowledged the urgent need to restore safety and order in light of recent events.
The Ghana Police Service also issued a statement indicating that efforts are underway to regain control of the security situation in Bawku and its surrounding areas, as well as along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway.
Alongside police deployments, the military will also be working to ensure security and manage vehicular traffic to prevent further violence and protect citizens.
“The security agencies would like to once again assure the public that we are committed to maintaining peace, security, law and order in Bawku and its environs.”
