The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Mamprusi Municipality, Issahaku Anineyaw Somo Lucky, is not confident that merely removing a rival chief in Bawku will curb the resurgence of violence in the community.
This comes after the Chieftaincy Minister highlighted that the return of the said chief was the genesis of the weekend attacks, which have left about 16 people dead.
According to the Minister, the latest unrest was triggered by the return of Seidu Abagre to Bawku on October 24, after his contentious enskinment as Bawku Naba in February 2023.
Despite the lack of legal recognition for this title, his presence has exacerbated tensions between rival factions, resulting in multiple clashes.
However, the Minister, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, told JoyNews that there was no need for a state of emergency.
Speaking on Top Story, the MCE backed the Minister’s stance regarding a state of emergency.
However, Issahaku Anineyaw Somo Lucky expressed reservations about the notion that the tension would cease with the removal of the purported rival chief.
He told host Evans Mensah that the situation would require more consultation with stakeholders to determine the best way forward.
The MCE feared that any other move have the propensity of aggravating the situation.
