The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has expressed his sadness over the Supreme Court’s verdict in the parliamentary vacant seats case.
According to him, the constitution is clear about what is required to declare a seat in Parliament vacant, so the Court’s decision has left him perplexed.
“I am sad about the decision of the Court. What is the evidence before the Court?” he said on JoyNews Today, following the Court’s ruling on Tuesday morning.
The lawmaker further said, “I don’t know what they (Supreme Court) are seeing.”
Speaking prior to the ruling on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Dafeamekpor claimed that the NPP instigated the case of the vacant seats.
In Tuesday’s ruling, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court determined that the Speaker’s declaration of the four seats as vacant was unconstitutional.
Speaker of Parliament in October declared four seats of parliament vacant due to the decisions by the MPs of the affected seats to contest in the December polls on party tickets other than what brought them into the House.
The case has since created confusion among the legislators over who occupies majority and minority in the chamber.
However, Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, filed an injunction on the declaration at the Supreme Court. Subsequently, the Court ruled that the Speaker's declaration would not hold.
After that court decision, Alban Bagbin filed an application at the Court to overturn the decision.
