Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the Bawumia Campaign Team, has voiced his disappointment with Alan Kyerematen, the 2024 flagbearer of the Movement for Change, over his recent criticism of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Kyerematen’s comments followed Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, as the most suitable candidate to lead Ghana in the 2024 general elections.
The former president endorsed Bawumia during an interaction with journalists on Sunday, 17th November.
In response, Alan Kyerematen criticised Kufuor on Oyerepa TV the following day, suggesting that the endorsement had exposed Kufuor to unnecessary political attacks and criticism. He argued that as a respected statesman, the former President ought not to have taken sides in the election.
Nana Akomea addressed Kyerematen’s remarks in an interview on Channel One TV, describing them as unfortunate.
He expressed disappointment that Kyerematen, who recently parted ways with the NPP, would take issue with the former president’s decision to support Bawumia.
Akomea questioned whether Kyerematen had expected Kufuor’s backing despite his departure from the party, implying that Kyerematen’s criticism was misplaced.
He defended the former president’s right to endorse the NPP’s candidate, pointing out that Kufuor remains a committed member of the party.
Furthermore, Nana Akomea called on political leaders to focus on issues that genuinely impact the Ghanaian populace, rather than becoming embroiled in internal disagreements.
He emphasised the importance of directing political discourse towards policies and initiatives that would improve the lives of citizens.
Akomea encouraged a more constructive approach to political engagement, noting that endorsements are part of a healthy democratic process and that individuals should respect the choices of party elders.
“It’s sad that Alan Kyerematen feels that way, who did Alan Kyerematen expect Kufuor to support? He Alan? He’s not a member of NPP. Is he a member of the NPP? If Kufuor goes to support Alan Kyerematen, Kufuor has taken himself out of the NPP. I think in the NPP, currently, Kufuor at one point used to be everybody’s boss, including President Akufo-Addo."
“So, Kufuor is like the old lady in the house, like the Akan people will call ‘Abrewatia’ that is how Kufuor is. The Abrewatia in the party you said he should go and endorse you Alan who is not in the party. You didn’t follow him to stay in that party, you left and he should follow you."
“Between Kufuor and Alan who should follow the other? I heard some of the things he said and it made me sad. At the time Kufuor appointed Alan as US Ambassador and Minster of Trade, there were people in the party who could have taken those appointments.”
