The Ghana Police Service is shifting gears with just days to the 2024 general election, adopting a transparent and proactive approach in its engagement with the media and the public.
Traditionally tight-lipped, the police’s limited communication with stakeholders has drawn criticism over the years.
However, with 18 days to the December 7 polls, the police now pledges to increase transparency, enhance public engagement, and provide timely information.
At a critical meeting with media heads on Wednesday, November 20, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare outlined fresh strategies, including the establishment of a 24-hour centralized press briefing center to keep the public informed throughout the election period.
“Misinformation and disinformation will have no role in this. It is for that reason we are setting up the National Election Security Taskforce Press Briefing Centre. A tent air-conditioned with the capacity to take 100 reporters … and we will be sharing the information with the speed of light,” he said.
He added that the persons assigned to speak on issues arising will be tasked to speak in seven languages.
He therefore urged the public to put their nationalist and patriotic side first as they assist in fighting misinformation, adding that there is the need to verify information received.
