Former Attorney General Martin Amidu has accused President Nana Akufo-Addo of harbouring a deep-seated fear of former President John Dramani Mahama’s potential return to power.
In a pointed critique, Mr Amidu claimed that the president’s actions in the lead-up to the December 2024 elections reflect paranoia and a deliberate attempt to secure a dynastic succession through Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
“Nana Akufo-Addo appears to have become so paranoid and obsessed with John Mahama winning the Presidency that he has forgotten the common courtesies a sitting President must extend to former preceding colleagues,” Mr Amidu charged.
Citing recent public statements by Akufo-Addo endorsing Bawumia, Amidu questioned the president’s impartiality.
“Only autocrats insist that their preferred and anointed candidate must win elections under their watch,” he declared.
Mr Amidu further argued that such endorsements are a violation of democratic norms and an affront to the electorate’s right to choose their leader.
The former Special Prosecutor labelled Dr Bawumia as “Nana Akufo-Addo’s clone and poodle” and warned that his succession would ensure the concealment of eight years of alleged corruption and looting.
He asserted, “Change at the 2024 elections will be the only way patriotic citizens and the electorate can effectively preserve and defend the 1992 Constitution from the dynastic anointment of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”
Calling for accountability, Amidu described Mahama as the only candidate capable of auditing the outgoing government’s activities.
“Nana Akufo-Addo has self-confessed that John Dramani Mahama is the one he fears most to conduct an audit on behalf of the electorate,” he claimed.
Martin Amidu concluded with a rallying call to voters to demand probity and accountability through the ballot box.“
"Ghana is not the patrimony of Nana Akufo-Addo and his government of family, friends, and cronies. Let us defend the Constitution by demanding probity and accountability, now on 7 December 2024!”
