Poultry farmers in the Twifo Atti Morkwa District of the Central Region are struggling to keep their businesses afloat due to the exorbitant cost of feed.
The prices of maize, soybean and other feed ingredients have surged, leading to significant increases in egg and poultry prices, making it difficult for farmers to sustain their operations.
Aside from the high cost, the farmers also faced shortages of feed ingredients, forcing them to travel to other regions to purchase the supplies, with those unable to afford being forced to fold up.
Mr Jeremiah Makal, caretaker of Maxess Farms at Twifo Praso, narrated to the Ghana News Agency how the feed issue was affecting the farm’s operations, which had collapsed many farms around the area.
He appealed for quick government intervention to save their livelihoods and help boost the local economy.
“The incoming government must provide financial support to help us produce more eggs and roosters for affordability, and for food and job security,” Mr Makal said.
The farm closures had resulted in job losses, affecting local economies while reducing production of chicken and eggs, and threatening food security.
