On Monday, December 23, security personnel of Electrochem Ghana Limited successfully intervened in an illegal mining operation within the company’s concession at the Songor Lagoon. The incident occurred during a routine patrol of the lagoon, which has undergone significant restoration under the company's stewardship following years of environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities

According to a statement released by Electrochem Ghana Limited, the situation was resolved peacefully after a 30-minute engagement with the unauthorized miners. The company emphasized that reports and a circulating video suggesting a confrontation between its personnel and the local community are misleading. The statement described the video as a false narrative potentially aimed at tarnishing the company’s reputation.

Since taking over the Songor Lagoon concession, Electrochem Ghana Limited has invested millions of dollars into restoring the lagoon. These efforts have revived the ecosystem and provided alternative livelihoods for fisherfolk in the Ada community. Among the initiatives introduced are the outgrower scheme and community salt pans, designed to empower locals by granting access to high-quality brine for sustainable salt production at no cost.

Electrochem reaffirmed its commitment to fostering positive relationships with stakeholders. The company has maintained an open dialogue with community representatives and government officials, including the Member of Parliament, to address concerns and ensure equitable resource access. "Our goal is to promote sustainable solutions that benefit everyone while preserving the ecological integrity of the lagoon," the statement noted.
