Moroccan authorities in the northeastern city of Taourirt have arrested an individual affiliated with the extremist ideology of the terrorist organisation Daesh.
The suspect, a teacher in Sidi Chafi village, was apprehended on Wednesday in an operation based on intelligence provided by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
According to a statement from the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), the arrest highlights Morocco’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorist threats and prevent extremist activities that could endanger the nation’s security and stability.
A search of the suspect’s residence led to the seizure of various chemical materials believed to be intended for the manufacture of homemade explosives.
Among the confiscated items were vials containing hydrochloric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and zinc sulfate, all of which have been sent for forensic analysis.
Additionally, authorities recovered edged weapons of various sizes, mobile phones, and electronic devices.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect had been actively researching materials and techniques for making explosives, to orchestrate a terrorist attack aimed at causing mass harm and disrupting public order.
The suspect is currently in custody at the BCIJ, under the supervision of the terrorism prosecutor’s office, as investigations continue to uncover potential accomplices and further details regarding the planned attack.
