Renowned scholar Prof Toyin Falola has emphasised the pivotal role African universities can play in shaping the continent's future.

Speaking at the closing conference of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences' Higher Education Project, Falola highlighted the potential of African universities to drive innovation, research, and information exchange.

"Many of our universities are grappling with issues that hinder their progress, yet they hold the key to Africa's future development," said Professor Falola.

"To overcome these challenges, we must invest in technology, create strong partnerships, and offer context-specific, inclusive courses that reflect Africa's unique needs and aspirations."

Professor Falola further highlighted several key areas for improvement, including the need for increased investment in higher education from both governments and the business sector.

Reiterating the importance of fostering collaborations between African universities, he stressed that technology integration is crucial for bridging the digital divide.

“Technology must be at the heart of our higher education strategy. It will allow our universities to participate fully in the global knowledge economy,” he explained.

The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences' Higher Education Project aims to foster collaborative solutions to the challenges facing Ghana's higher education sector.

The project commissioned seven background papers and convened seven policy dialogues, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss pressing issues.

These dialogues are designed to generate collaborative solutions and drive meaningful change in the sector.
