Belgium considers Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, presented in 2007, a serious and credible effort and a strong foundation for a solution acceptable to all parties.
Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Cultural Institutions, Bernard Quintin, said on Wednesday in Rabat.
Speaking at a press briefing following talks with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Quintin emphasized the existential importance of the issue for Morocco.
“My discussions with Minister Bourita helped me understand the ins and outs of the autonomy plan and realize how vital this matter is for Morocco,” he stated.
The Belgian minister also acknowledged shifting positions among key European and international partners, noting that Belgium and Morocco “will continue to engage constructively” on the matter.
Reaffirming Belgium’s stance, Quintin expressed full support for the UN-led process in pursuit of a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution, underscoring the UN’s exclusive role in the negotiations.
He also reiterated Belgium’s backing for UN Security Council Resolution 2703, which highlights the responsibility of all parties to achieve a realistic, pragmatic, and enduring political resolution based on compromise.
Belgium’s constructive position aligns with the growing international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the Autonomy Plan, a momentum driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him.
