Cabo Verde’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Regional Integration, José Filomeno de Carvalho Dias Monteiro, has reiterated his country’s unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, including over the Sahara region.
Speaking at a press briefing in Rabat on Tuesday after meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, he reaffirmed Cabo Verde’s backing of the 2007 autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, describing it as “the only credible and realistic solution” to the regional dispute.
Dias Monteiro also commended the United Nations for its role as the “exclusive framework” in seeking a practical, realistic, and lasting resolution to the Sahara issue.
He stated that Cabo Verde’s position aligns with international momentum, bolstered by the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in support of Morocco’s sovereignty and the autonomy initiative.
Minister Bourita, in turn, expressed gratitude for Cabo Verde’s “steadfast and firm” support, highlighting the significance of the country’s diplomatic presence through the opening of a Consulate General in Dakhla in August 2022.
