Xoese Ghana, a non-governmental organisation supporting women with fertility challenges, has celebrated the birth of its first baby through the Xoese Fertility and Maternal Support Project (Xoese FMS).

The baby boy was delivered at a health facility in Tema on Friday, 21 February 2025, after his mother received fertility treatment assistance beginning in 2024. This milestone marks a significant achievement for Xoese Ghana in its mission to combat infertility stigma in the country.

Healthcare professionals who attended to the mother and child reported that both were healthy throughout the antenatal period and during delivery. Consequently, they were discharged the following day.

The Fertility Journey

The Executive Director of Xoese Ghana, Ms Emelia Naa Ayeley Aryee, shared that the 27-year-old beneficiary contacted the organisation in April 2024, expressing frustration over her three-year struggle to conceive. Despite previous medical consultations and prescribed treatments, she had not achieved the desired results. At Xoese Ghana, a pelvic scan identified the underlying issue.

"With Madam Millicent, her issues became apparent with the first pelvic scan. She began treatment the same day, which was to last for two weeks. She was also provided with specific guidelines by our in-house doctor, Dr Samuel Gyedu Owusu," Ms Aryee disclosed.

Following the treatment, a subsequent scan confirmed the infection had been resolved. In June, Millicent informed the organisation that she was three weeks pregnant. "That was wonderful news for us because our goal is to break infertility stigma by helping women overcome infertility and achieve pregnancy," Ms Aryee added.

From the announcement of the pregnancy, Millicent was advised to attend a nearby health facility for antenatal care and received ongoing support from Xoese Ghana throughout her pregnancy journey.

Xoese FMS Project

Launched in February 2024, the Xoese FMS project provides medical support to women and couples seeking assistance to conceive. The initiative was prompted by the discovery during Xoese Ghana's inaugural event, the PCOS Seminar in September 2023, that many couples required help to start their families.

The project has established partnerships with fertility facilities, including Clarity Specialist Scan and Metropolis Healthcare, offering services such as semen analysis, hormonal tests, pelvic scans, transvaginal scans, and urine analysis at discounted rates for Xoese Ghana beneficiaries. Collaborations have also been formed with fertility centres like Tema Women's Hospital, Accra Fertility Centre, and Lister Hospitals for advanced cases.

Dr Samuel Gyedu Owusu, the Board Chairman of Xoese Ghana, oversees all cases presented to the organisation, referring them to partner fertility centres when necessary. To date, over 30 women have benefited from the Xoese FMS Project.

In collaboration with Kinapharma Pharmaceutical Limited and Dannex Ayrton Starwin (DAS) Pharmaceutical Limited, the project has donated iron supplements and cough syrups to Tema Manhean Polyclinic, St Anthony's Hospital in Dzodze, Volta Region, and staff of Mamprobi Polyclinic to help treat anaemia in pregnant women.

Ms Aryee indicated that the Xoese FMS Project would soon expand to other regions of Ghana. Recently, Xoese Ghana garnered attention for its Fertility Conference and PCOS Management Webinar, aimed at educating women and couples on enhancing fertility and providing direct access to fertility experts.
