The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) elections took a dramatic turn following the deployment of national security personnel and soldiers to the election venue.
Incumbent GWF President, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has strongly criticized the involvement of security forces, arguing that it is unprecedented in the history of the sport.
“Since when did national security start getting involved in federation activities? Who has even paid attention to weightlifting better than I have, for it to suddenly warrant national security involvement?” he questioned.
According to him some individuals wearing T-shirts affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were brought in to protest further fueling concerns of political interference in the electoral process.
Shaib believes that such actions not only undermine the integrity of the elections but could also have serious consequences for the sport’s governance and international reputation.
“If we go down this path, we risk having our federation licenses and powers revoked,” he warned.
