A widespread blackout that hit major parts of the country on the night of Thursday, April 3, has been fully resolved, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has confirmed in a statement.
According to GRIDCo, the national power outage, which disrupted electricity supply in parts of Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, Techiman, Bui, Tumu, Sawla, and other parts of northern Ghana, was triggered by a fault on the Tafo-Nkawkaw transmission line at exactly 20:09 hours.
The initial fault set off a cascade of failures across adjacent lines, resulting in the shutdown of several power plants.
This sudden drop in power generation caused large portions of the country, especially regions beyond Kumasi, to go dark, the Company explained.
"GRIDCo’s System Control Centre (SCC) sprang into action immediately, initiating emergency measures to stabilise the national grid.
“Restoration of supply to affected areas began swiftly, and by 22:57 hrs, full power had been restored,” the statement noted.
The company offered an unreserved apology to Ghanaians for the inconvenience caused.
“The Ghana Grid Company sincerely apologises to the general public for the disruption,” said Dzifa Bampoh, Manager of Corporate Communications at GRIDCo.
