Students of Hwediem Senior High School (SHS) in the Ahafo region have protested against the school's management over poor sanitary and academic facilities, and the constant demand for unapproved fees.
On Tuesday, a large number of agitated students, mostly boys, took to the principal streets of the school to register their displeasure over the continuous discomfort they have experienced since 2013.
Sulemana Yahaya, the Boys Senior Prefect (SP), told JoyNews that wood logs on their open toilet have become very weak, coupled with unbearable stench and heat from the toilet, which poses a death trap and possible outbreak of disease.
He enumerated some of their pressing issues, including unsatisfactory meals in terms of quality and the quantity served over the years, inadequate furniture, resources and equipment in classrooms, science and computer laboratories.

"There are many instances students have to make contributions before teaching and learning materials are bought for the academic activities of the school to run. Our books, beds and other materials are inadequate," he reiterated.
The students also accused the school authorities of taking an unapproved GH₵250 PTA fee per head in each term, 10 bags of cement from any student who sneaks to town, and other payments demanded by the school frequently.
"We have been bedeviled with this pain and discomfort for over two and a half years. Though we keep complaining, nothing has been done to end it. We are fed up now. We demand urgent accountability from the school authorities."
Calm has been restored, and teaching and learning are going on smoothly with the support of the police.
Meanwhile, the Asutifi District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured the general public, especially parents, that the issues will be solved amicably.
