President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), declaring that those responsible for the destruction of Ghana’s forests and water bodies will be made to face justice.
Addressing workers at the 2025 May Day celebration at Black Star Square in Accra, President Mahama admitted that tackling the menace of illegal mining—commonly known as ‘galamsey’—is no easy task.
Nonetheless, he emphasised that his government would remain resolute in pursuing the cause.
“The fight against galamsey is a complex one, and when I was vying for the presidency, I did not kid myself that when I come into office, I will win that fight in four months, yet we will not give up,” he stated.
The president further assured the public that Ghana’s security forces are well-equipped to deal with illegal mining operations across the country.
“Our gallant men of the Armed Forces and security services are up to the fight, and we will continue to score successes against the selfish companies and individuals who are destroying our forests and polluting our water bodies,” he affirmed.
Reiterating his government’s resolve, he concluded, “As far as the fight against galamsey is concerned, I say Aluta Continua.”
