Kenyan football was thrown into turmoil on Sunday after a top-flight league match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia descended into violence, leaving 66 supporters hospitalised.

What should have been an exciting fixture turned chaotic even before kick-off at the Gusii Stadium, as rival fans clashed violently, hurling stones and other objects at each other.

The violence erupted in the stands, resulting in serious injuries, with two fans suffering skull fractures.

Despite Gor Mahia securing a narrow 1-0 victory through a late strike by midfielder Sylvester Wanyama, the on-pitch result was quickly overshadowed by the ugly scenes off it.

Gor Mahia later issued a statement expressing regret over the incident: “We witnessed very sad moments at Gusii Stadium before the game. Police confirm 66 fans were injured and admitted to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital and RAM Hospital. We wish a quick recovery to all those affected.”

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) also issued a strong condemnation of the violence, calling for calm and reaffirming their commitment to safety in football arenas.

“Football must remain a unifying force, not one that endangers lives,” the FKF stated. “The safety of fans, players, and officials is paramount. We are collaborating with the relevant authorities to uncover the root causes and will take decisive disciplinary action once investigations conclude.”

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident, with many calling for tighter security and better crowd control at football venues across the country.
