The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), in consultation with the Ministry of Education, has directed all Vice Chancellors of traditional public universities to suspend the nomination of representatives of the Tertiary Education Workers’ Union (TEWU) to their respective governing councils until further notice.
This directive follows an ongoing leadership dispute between two factions of the union, the Tertiary Education Workers’ Union (TEWU-GH) and the Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union under the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC).
A statement signed by Jerry Sarto, Director of Corporate Affairs at GTEC, noted that the Commission is currently engaging both parties to resolve the impasse.
As a result, all TEWU members who have already been sworn in as representatives on the governing councils of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), University for Development Studies (UDS), and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are now considered suspended.
GTEC has scheduled a meeting with TEWU-GH, TEWU-TUC, and Vice Chancellors-Ghana for May 16, 2025, to deliberate on the matter and determine the way forward.
The Commission expressed its hope for a resolution and appealed for the cooperation of all stakeholders during the period of suspension.
