Lawrence Agyekum says there is no competition between himself and Abu Francis at Cercle Brugge as he sees the latter as a brother.
Agyekum joined the Belgian Jupiler Pro League side last summer from Red Bull Salzburg, playing alongside Abu who has been at the club since 2022.
The two players started some leagues together at some point last season but Agyekum became a mainstay in the team subsequently.
In an exclusive interview with Joy Sports, the 21-year-old says his Ghanaian compatriot has been helpful to him since his arrival.
“I didn’t know he [Abu Francis] was playing there. When everything was done, there I went through the club’s profile to see if there a player I can relate with; that was when I followed up with him and when I went to the club I met,” he said.
“He told me a lot about the club when I arrived. He really helped me. When people tend to have their countrymen on the same team, they see it to be a competition but I didn’t see him [Abu Francis] as that.
“I saw him as someone who can really help me because he has much experience. So I looked up to him.”
After initially arriving on loan, Agyekum signed a permanent contract with Cercle Brugge before the end of the season until June 2029.
