A Head porter has appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court for destroying and stealing six metal guardrails at the Obetsebi Lamptey overpass at Kaneshie in Accra.
Yaw Asare, 48, charged with causing unlawful damage and stealing metal guardrails belonging to the Ghana Highways Authority, pleaded guilty with explanation.
The metals, value not yet known, were stolen by the accused on June 9, 2025.
The court, presided over by Mrs El-Alawa Abdul-Bassiit, however, held that Asare’s explanation was inconsistent with his plea.
It, therefore, convicted Asare on his plea and remanded him, but deferred his sentence to June 23.
The prosecution’s facts were that Adam Alhassan was the complainant, residing at Sukura, while Asare was a head porter, who resided at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
Prosecution said that a few months after the construction of the Obetsebi Lamptey Overpass, it was observed that the metal guardrail supported by offset blocks had been stolen.
Given that, surveillance was placed on the ground, it said.
On June 9, around 11:30 pm, the complainant and his patrol team met a mob assaulting the accused person. They intervened and rescued Asare.
However, information gathered at the scene showed that he had removed six pieces of the metal guardrails from their offset blocks.
Asare was handed over to the police, together with the exhibits and his shifting spinner tool.
Asare admitted the offence during interrogation at the police station, saying he removed the metals to sell to scrap dealers.
Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to ascertain and confirm the value of the damaged metal.
