The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has arrested two people in connection with the killing of a former Headmaster of Dampong Senior High School (SHS), Eric Obeng Darko.
The suspects, Mohammed Mubarak, aged 38, and Elizabeth Darkwah, also aged 38, were arrested on June 9 and 17, respectively.
They were subsequently arraigned before the Kodie and Suame District Courts, remanded into police custody, and are expected to reappear in court on July 4, 2025.
In a statement, the Police said preliminary investigations revealed that in 2024, Elizabeth allegedly defrauded the deceased by collecting an unspecified amount of money under the pretext of helping him unearth ancient family gold.
As part of the scheme, she reportedly visited the victim’s residence at Bampenase near Mamponteng at night with Mubarak. Together, they dug up 20 pieces of a yellowish substance, claiming it was gold that needed to be purified at her church before it could be used or sold.
However, she later avoided all attempts by the deceased to arrange the so-called purification.
She then allegedly conspired with Mubarak and three other suspects currently on the run to abduct and kill him before he could visit the church.
Mr Darko was taken to Aboabugya, and when he attempted to escape, he was deliberately knocked down and run over by a Honda Odyssey vehicle driven by Mubarak, resulting in his death.
Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices.
