The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma North rerun, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, has reaffirmed her commitment to vigilance and accountability as polls officially closed at exactly 5:00pm today.
Speaking to journalists just moments after the end of voting, Akua Afriyie stated, “We neither sleep nor slumber,” a remark she made a number of fans followed her and sang her praise.
Her comments come in the wake of a highly charged political atmosphere surrounding the rerun, which was ordered by the Electoral Commission after irregularities were cited in a few polling stations during the original December 7, 2024, general election.
Despite an official boycott declared by the NPP leadership, Akua Afriyie and the NPP insisted on participating in the rerun, maintaining that she had a commanding lead from the original results and was merely returning to solidify her position.
She has described the rerun as unnecessary but was confident that “the outcome of the election will be my victory.”
The rerun, held across 19 polling stations in the constituency, attracted attention from political observers and voters alike, with security and electoral officials ensuring a smooth voting process throughout the day. Akua Afriyie’s presence and active engagement have reinforced her individual stance, separate from the party’s national posture.
Vote counting has commenced, and the Electoral Commission is expected to declare results in the coming hours. As tensions remain high, Afriyie’s bold declaration signals her readiness to defend what she believes to be a rightful mandate.
The outcome of this rerun is expected to carry implications not just for the constituency but also for the broader discussion on electoral fairness and internal party cohesion.
