Four individuals have been arrested by the North East Regional Police Command in connection with the alleged murder of a 70-year-old woman accused of witchcraft at Sangbana, a farming community in the Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo District.
The suspects have been identified as Suuk Jakwa, 67; Banyiwoo Ntookwib, 32; Moapya Kwayaja, 30; and Amos Nlaji, 29. They are alleged to have conspired with others, who are currently on the run, to attack and lynch the deceased, Noab Bilatukin.
Confirming the incident, the North East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Robert Anabiik Anmain, stated that on 10 July 2025, the suspects allegedly accused the deceased of being a witch who was casting spells in the community, and proceeded to violently lynch her before fleeing the scene.
Acting on credible intelligence, the police tracked down and arrested the four suspects at their respective hideouts in and around Bunkpurugu on 14 July 2025.
DSP Anmain noted that the suspects are currently in custody and assisting police with further investigations.
While condemning the act, he reiterated the command’s resolve to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
He further urged the public to refrain from mob injustice and witchcraft accusations, emphasising that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
