Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team produced a stunning performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, storming to victory in Heat 2 with a new national record of 37.79s to qualify for the final.

Running in Heat 2, the Ghanaian quartet of Ibrahim Fuseini, Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu combined precision with explosive speed to deliver one of the nation’s greatest relay runs on the global stage. Their time eclipsed the previous record of 38.07s set at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene.

Starting from the blocks, Ibrahim Fuseini gave Ghana a steady opening leg, clocking 10.57s to hand over the baton cleanly. Though not the quickest starter in the field, Fuseini’s composed run set the platform for what followed.

On the back straight, Benjamin Azamati unleashed his trademark speed, covering his leg in a blistering 8.74s, the fastest by any athlete on the track. His surge powered Ghana into contention, moving them up alongside The Netherlands and Japan.

The third leg was taken up by Joseph Paul Amoah, who anchored to team to set the previous record. His smooth bend-running and strong acceleration as he split 9.41s before exchanging for the anchor, Abdul Rasheed Saminu, finalist in the 100m on Day 1 of this year's championships.

He blazed down the home straight, running 9.07s to cross the line first and secure qualification with the fastest time across the heats.

Ghana’s 37.79s (NR) led all qualifiers, followed closely by Canada (37.85s, SB) as they won Heat 1, the Netherlands (37.95s), and the United States (37.98s). Japan, Germany, Australia, and France completed the list of finalists.
