Sports Minister Kofi Adams has praised President John Mahama for his role in securing financial support for clubs in the Ghana Premier League.
For the first time in the league’s history, each of the 18 top-flight sides received GHS1 million before the start of the season.
Adams revealed that the package was made possible by Mahama’s direct intervention at the cabinet level, mobilising both public and private funding.
“Your Excellency, that vision, met with dedication and investment, is yielding results,” Adams said after leading Asante Kotoko and Bibiani GoldStars to the Jubilee House.
“Today, the clubs have started the premiership with each premier club receiving a million Ghana cedis to start with.”
In addition to the support, Mahama also announced $100,000 financial package to Asante Kotoko and Bibiani GoldStars to boost their participation in this season’s CAF inter-club competitions with each club receiving $50,000.
Meanwhile, GoldStars started their campaign with a 2-0 loss to JS Kabylie in the first leg of the Preliminary round in the CAF Champions League.
Kotoko will face Nigeria’s Kwara United on Sunday in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup.
