A book on prostate cancer authored by Ghanaian urologist Dr. Lemuel Davies Bray was launched on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at a well-attended ceremony held at the Tema West Health Directorate Conference Room.
The book, titled “Understanding Prostate Cancer and Its Treatments,” is a simplified educational resource designed for both clinicians and patients.
According to Dr. Bray, a consultant urologist at Tema General Hospital, his motivation for writing the book was driven by a passion to go beyond prescribing medication and to contribute meaningfully towards curbing the devastating impact of the disease on livelihoods.
“I have attempted to answer most of the frequently asked questions about prostate cancer, provide helpful information on the most current treatment modalities, and offer a practical guide to the decision-making process for both clinicians and patients,” Dr. Bray said at the launch.
The book consists of 22 chapters covering topics such as prostate enlargement, inflammation of the prostate gland, global perspectives on the disease, treatment for localised prostate cancer, and treatment for advanced prostate cancer, among others.

Several speakers at the launch, including Dr. Ralph Armah, Medical Director of Tema General Hospital, and Prof. Matthew Yamoah Kyei, Head of Surgery of the University of Ghana Medical School, commended Dr. Bray for his diligence and for bringing honour to Tema General Hospital.
The event was attended by representatives from the Ghana Association of Urological Surgeons (GAUS), New Crystal Hospital, Raphal Medical Centre, Impact-Caiquo Hospital, and Lena Hospital. Also represented were Dawhenya Medical Centre, Mount Carmel Hospital, Sakumono Community Hospital, International Maritime Hospital, Tema Women’s Hospital, as well as staff of Tema General Hospital.
Copies of the book are currently available at the Outpatient Department (OPD) of Tema General Hospital.
