The Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FoSCel) has commended the government and National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for making treatment for sickle cell disease free under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The Foundation explained that the journey began with its advocacy around World Sickle Cell Day.
In a statement, FoSCel said: “As part of our activities marking World Sickle Cell Day, the Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FoSCel) partnered with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to advocate for improved healthcare access for persons living with sickle cell disease.”
As part of this campaign, the Foundation submitted a proposal to ensure free treatment for patients under the NHIS.
According to FoSCel, the proposal received early support from the Authority. “FoSCel introduced a policy proposal for free sickle cell treatment under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). We are pleased to announce that the NHIA officially recognised this initiative and published it on their website and Facebook platform,” the statement said.

FoSCel has now confirmed that the proposal has moved from recognition to full government action.
“Today, we are proud to confirm that the Government of Ghana has implemented this policy through the NHIS, making sickle cell treatment free for patients nationwide,” the Foundation announced.
Describing the policy as a breakthrough, FoSCel highlighted the value of strong partnerships.
“This milestone is a testament to what strong advocacy and collaboration can achieve. We remain committed to further engagements with stakeholders to ensure that persons living with sickle cell continue to receive the best possible support.”
