Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has donated GH¢100,000 to support the medical treatment of victims injured in the El‑Wak Sports Stadium stampede during a military recruitment exercise.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, 12 November 2025, claimed the lives of six individuals and left 28 people injured after thousands of hopeful applicants thronged the venue for screening into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
Mr Bagbin visited the victims at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra on Thursday, accompanied by parliamentary leadership, to express solidarity with the injured and their families.
He described the gesture as an effort “to help alleviate the financial burden on the victims and demonstrate Parliament’s solidarity with affected families,” and voiced grave concern over the recurring risks in public-sector recruitment drives.
“The recurring challenges associated with public sector recruitment exercises” must prompt urgent reform, he said.
In the wake of the tragedy, the GAF suspended the national recruitment exercise to allow for investigations into the circumstances that led to the stampede.
The stampede occurred when a sudden surge of applicants breached entry barriers at El-Wak, prompting chaos and a rush. Of the injured, five were reported to be in intensive care while twelve remained in critical condition.
