The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to fulfilling President Mahama’s flagship pledge of improving teacher welfare through adequate housing.
Addressing a press briefing on Wednesday, November 19, he revealed that the Ministry is reviewing proposals from key funding institutions to support a nationwide teacher housing scheme.
“As you will recall, in the manifesto we promised teacher bungalows. I am reviewing a paper and a proposal from the District Assemblies Common Fund. The District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), GETFund, GSOP, and teacher pension funds, we intend to embark on a provision of 50,000 housing units for teachers," he said.
Mr. Iddrisu disclosed that the Administrator of the DACF had recently travelled to Morocco to engage potential partners.
“What we need is to identify what the funding mechanism will be for the delivery of it,” he added.
The minister emphasised that improving infrastructure and teacher welfare remains central to government’s transformation agenda for Ghana’s education sector.
