The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has alleged that the Ghana Audit Service is being undermined, rendering it ineffective in the fight against corruption.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse during the 2025 Year in Review discussion on Wednesday, Mr. Mohammed said budgetary constraints and reduced allowances have weakened the institution, making it vulnerable to external influence.
“The biggest corruption-preventing institution in Ghana is the Ghana Audit Service. Today, it is being relegated to the background. Budget lines meant for their operations and remuneration have been sidelined.
"If you make the Auditor General poor, you suffocate the office, and you cannot expect meaningful outcomes,” he stated.
Mr. Mohammed further criticised the government of President John Dramani Mahama for allegedly discontinuing several high-profile corruption cases, including the Saglemi project and cases involving former Bank of Ghana officials, claiming that such actions undermine efforts to hold public officials accountable.
“The government has filed nolle prosequi in seven critical cases, including SSNIT-related matters. Every prominent case we were pursuing for causing financial loss to the state has been discontinued,” he added.
