The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has announced plans to engage domestic airlines to lower the cost of flights in the country.
Answering a question on the cost of domestic flights in the country before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, January 13, she said, "The price for domestic flights is indeed expensive."
She explained that "Unfortunately, it doesn't lie in the domain of the Ghana Airport Company; it is an airline issue."
"What we can do is just to engage and appeal that the prices are reduced," she said.
Mrs Afriyie Opare attributed the high prices of domestic flights to a lack of competition in the market.
She expressed optimism that the entry of more operators would help bring prices down, making air travel more affordable for Ghanaians.
"Because there is a duopoly of domestic carriers, meaning just two airlines operating at the moment. If we are able to get more domestic carriers, the competition will force the prices to go down, and so we are working on whether we can get more domestic carriers to operate."
Domestic flight traffic in the country occurs between Accra, Kumasi, and the northern regions.
According to flight records, the lowest price for domestic flights is hovering around GH₵3,000.
