Former Member of Parliament for Yendi, Dr Farouk Aliu Mahama, has emphasised that support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, from northern Ghana is based on competence, not regional affiliation.
Mr Mahama made the remarks on JoyNews’ AM show on Wednesday, January 21, highlighting the former Vice President’s ability to lead the country effectively.
“Northerners are not supporting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia because he comes from the north but because he is competent and ready to lead Ghana,” Farouk Aliu Mahama said.
“He is the one who can win power for the NPP and deliver results for all Ghanaians.”
He stressed that regional loyalty has never been the primary factor in political decisions in northern Ghana, noting historical examples.
“The north didn’t vote for my late father, Aliu Mahama, or Malik Alhassan,” Farouk Aliu Mahama explained, reinforcing that voters prioritise capability and leadership qualities over origin.
Farouk Aliu Mahama argued that Dr Bawumia’s track record, particularly in economic and financial management during his tenure as Vice President, has earned him respect and confidence across all regions.
“Competence speaks louder than anything else. It is why the northern electorates see Bawumia as the right choice to lead the nation,” he said.
He concluded by urging delegates of the New Patriotic Party to consider leadership ability as the key factor in the upcoming flagbearer primaries.
“It is about the future of Ghana. The people want results, not just regional representation. Bawumia is the competent leader our country needs,” Farouk Aliu Mahama added.
