Former Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Prof. Frimpong Boateng, has sparked debate by downplaying the role of economists in Ghana's development.
He dismissed the notion that Ghana needs an economist to develop the country.
Speaking on Nhyira FM's "Kukurantumi" weekend breakfast show hosted by Barima Kofi Dawson, he emphasised that an economist can not single-handedly develop Ghana.
"We've got it stuck in our heads that an economist will magically fix everything. But let me tell you, there is no way an economist can develop Ghana."
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng was responding to claims that former Vice President Dr Bawumia, an economist, was not given the chance to utilise his skills under President Akufo-Addo's administration.
"They say Akufo-Addo did not allow Bawumia to do his work as an economist and even struggled to get funds for some initiatives he brought on board," he said.
He questioned where the funding would come from for initiatives proposed by Dr Bawumia, implying that resources are not the primary issue.
According to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, Ghana needs leaders who can create wealth and jobs.
He pointed out to successful Ghanaian entrepreneurs without economic backgrounds who have created numerous jobs.
He described them as innovators, problem-solvers, and deal-makers, exactly the kind of leaders Ghana needs to drive progress.
"We need people who create worth and jobs. Look at our rich folks who have created jobs, none of them are economists. Those are the people we need leading Ghana," he stressed.
He noted that Ghanaians are concerned with finding jobs that will help them put food on their table and improve their living standards.
