Media General has condemned the brutal assault on its North East Regional Correspondent, Mr Solomon Kwame Kanaluwe, allegedly by military personnel in Walewale.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the media organisation said it received with deep concern reports that its journalist was attacked by soldiers on January 26, 2026, while going about his lawful duties.
According to Media General, Mr Kanaluwe was not filming or covering any military operation at the time of the incident, but was engaged in his normal daily activities when he was confronted and assaulted.
The company described the incident as an "unwarranted act of violence, a serious abuse of power and a violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution."
“Media General strongly condemns this act of violence against a journalist who was going about his daily activities without filming any military exercise,” the statement said.

The media organisation has called on the Military High Command and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to urgently and thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that all personnel found culpable are identified and appropriately sanctioned in accordance with military and national laws.
Media General has also petitioned the Ministry of Defence to take decisive action to address what it described as a growing pattern of military brutality against innocent civilians, including journalists, during internal security operations.
“The use of excessive force against unarmed citizens is unacceptable and must not be allowed to persist,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom and the safety of journalists, Media General said it would continue to pursue all lawful avenues to ensure accountability and to safeguard the rights and welfare of its journalists across the country.
“Journalism is not a crime, and no journalist should be subjected to violence, intimidation or abuse in the course of duty,” the statement concluded.
