Dr. Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, a political analyst and lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s success in the 2028 presidential election will depend not only on his personal credentials but also on the cohesion and public image of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In an interview, Dr. Bomfeh likened the challenge facing the newly elected flagbearer to carrying a banner that must appeal broadly to the electorate.
He stressed that even a highly capable candidate could falter if the party is perceived as divided or misaligned with voter expectations.
“The NPP must first address its internal challenges. Urgent restructuring and reconciliation are required to present a united front. Internal rifts, if left unresolved, could diminish Dr. Bawumia’s appeal,” Dr. Bomfeh said.
He further emphasised that regaining public trust requires more than policy proposals, urging the party to demonstrate tangible solutions to the everyday concerns of Ghanaians.
Dr. Bomfeh added that the flagbearer must be visibly engaged in efforts to unite party supporters and reposition the NPP as responsive to the electorate’s needs.
“It is not enough to talk about change; the party must show practical commitment and harmony between its words and actions,” he noted.
His remarks followed Dr. Bawumia’s victory in the NPP presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026, where the former Vice-President secured 110,643 votes out of 195,901 valid ballots, confirming his candidacy for the 2028 general election.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong came second with 46,554 votes, Dr. Bryan Acheampong third with 36,303 votes, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum fourth with 1,999 votes, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong fifth with 402 votes, with 561 ballots rejected.
