The National Chief Imam, Shaikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has congratulated former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on his victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Dr Bawumia emerged as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections, defeating four other contenders in a closely contested race.
Speaking on behalf of the Muslim community, the Chief Imam praised both Dr Bawumia and the NPP for upholding democratic principles throughout the process.
“The decision of the delegates is a clear manifestation that Ghana is not a theocracy but a democracy beautified by religious pluralism,” he said.
He also commended the other aspirants for conceding gracefully, noting that their actions reinforced the importance of unity in democratic contests.
“In a civilised democratic institution such as NPP, approaches to intra-party contests are plural, but the ultimate objective remains singular,” His Eminence emphasised.
The Chief Imam further highlighted the role of law enforcement and the Electoral Commission in ensuring a fair and transparent process.
“They exhibited transparency, accountability, and objectivity in their roles in the conduct of the primary election,” he remarked.
Concluding his message, the National Chief Imam reminded Ghanaians of the collective responsibility required to sustain democracy.
“Democracy is shared responsibility and a civic duty. When we all play our roles effectively in pursuit of democratic prosperity, we will not remember the discomfort of individual struggles, but the comfort of our collective success,” he said.
