President John Dramani Mahama has outlined the Accra Reset Initiative as a strategic framework aimed at redefining Africa’s development trajectory and reducing the continent’s overdependence on external systems.
Addressing Zambia’s National Assembly, President Mahama said the initiative seeks reform rather than disruption of global partnerships.
He explained that many African countries remain trapped in what he described as “triple dependency” — reliance on external actors for security, donors for social services, and foreign firms for mineral value chains — a situation he said undermines genuine sovereignty.
“The Accra Reset does not seek to disrupt global partnerships. It advocates forging new partnerships to transform global systems that have been rigged against Africa for a long time,” he said.
President Mahama called for reforms in global governance, including fair representation on the United Nations Security Council and the restructuring of international financial systems that perpetuate debt and poverty across the Global South.
However, he stressed that domestic leadership and good governance remain central to the success of the initiative.
“While we must work collectively to reform global systems, much depends on how we act locally. Leadership is fundamental to achieving the Accra Reset’s goals,” President Mahama noted.
