A student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH) has been stabbed amid unrest at the Eastern Regional Inter-Schools Sports Festival in Koforidua, raising fears of retaliation and heightening security concerns.
The victim, Jerome Appiah, was reportedly attacked by a group of Form Two students from New Juaben Senior High School while eating waakye on his way to campus, where he sustained a deep machete wound to the shoulder and bled heavily.
Police from the Eastern Regional Command quickly responded to the scene and rushed the injured student to the Eastern Regional Hospital, where he is receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
In the wake of the stabbing, Koforidua SECTECH Headmaster Emmanuel Frimpong Benjabeng, accompanied by teachers, rushed to the Koforidua Youth Resource Centre, the venue of the ongoing inter-school sports festival, to prevent possible retaliatory attacks by agitated students.
Mr Benjabeng was meeting with New Juaben South Municipal Education Director, Mustapha Haruna Appiah, when news of further disturbances broke.
Reports indicate that the teacher suffered a head injury after being hit by a flying stone during clashes involving students of Nsutam Senior High Technical School, who were reportedly throwing stones.
Expressing concern over the recurring violence, the New Juaben South Municipal Education Director, Mustapha Haruna Appia,h called on the police and event organisers to conduct a thorough investigation and strengthen security measures to prevent further incidents.
