Yvonne Nana Afriyiye Opare, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), has called for the expansion of domestic and intra-regional air routes to position Ghana as a leading aviation hub.
She said improved domestic connectivity was essential to strengthening the country’s overall aviation framework.
Mrs Opare made the call at the fifth AviationGhana Breakfast Meeting in Accra, held on the theme: “Advancing Ghana’s Aviation Sector: Policy, Connectivity, and Sustainable Growth.”
She noted that while international connectivity remained important, equal attention must be given to building stronger links among Ghana’s regional airports.
“If we want to make Ghana a hub in the West Africa region, we have to open up our connectivity, both international connections and domestic intra-regional flights such as Kumasi-Tamale, Tamale-Ho and others,” she said.
Mrs Opare stated that increased domestic flight options would enhance passenger convenience, stimulate regional economic activity, and improve airport utilisation across the country.
She explained that efficient domestic networks were a foundational component of successful hub models globally, enabling smoother passenger transfers and supporting broader connectivity strategies.
Mrs Opare said expanding intra-domestic routes would not only improve mobility within Ghana but also reinforce Accra’s role as a central node linking regional cities to international destinations.
The meeting brought together key industry stakeholders to deliberate on policy direction, infrastructure development and improved air connectivity.
The fifth AviationGhana Breakfast Meeting, organised by AviationGhana.com, is an annual event that brings together policymakers and operators from the aviation and travel sectors to discuss key industry issues and explore solutions to prevailing challenges.
