Costa Rica has endorsed Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the most viable path to resolving the long-standing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
In a joint declaration issued in Rabat on March 27, Costa Rica described the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty as “the most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic basis for reaching a political solution,” adding that it “could be the most feasible solution” to the regional conflict.
The position was reached after talks between Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Costa Rican counterpart, Arnoldo André Tinoco, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom.
Costa Rica further signalled its commitment to act on this stance across multiple fronts, including political, diplomatic, economic and consular engagements.
The Central American country also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025) and acknowledged the importance Morocco places on the Sahara issue.
It noted that it is closely following the “positive momentum” surrounding the matter under King Mohammed VI's leadership.
Both sides reaffirmed their support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, as well as ongoing international initiatives aimed at advancing a political process toward a lasting resolution of the dispute.
