President John Mahama has unveiled plans to roll out Ghana’s Free Primary Health Care Programme, a major policy initiative aimed at improving access to essential health services and reducing the financial burden on citizens.
Speaking at a presidential dialogue with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on Monday, March 30, 2026, the President said the programme forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s healthcare system, particularly at the primary and community levels.
He explained that the initiative will be supported by efforts to reinforce the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, with a focus on expanding preventive care and improving service delivery nationwide.
“I am delighted to announce that the government will officially launch the Free Primary Health Care Programme on April 15, 2026,” he stated.
President Mahama also emphasised the role of CSOs in ensuring the programme's success, calling on them to support public education, track implementation, and provide feedback to enhance its impact.
According to him, the initiative is designed to ensure that all Ghanaians can access basic healthcare services without financial hardship, while strengthening the overall resilience and effectiveness of the health system.
