The Executive Director of Challenging Heights, James Kofi Annan, says his work supporting vulnerable children has not only transformed lives but also given him purpose, global recognition and personal fulfilment over the past 21 years.
Speaking on The Big Interview on Joy Prime with host Kpekpo Maxwell Justice, Annan emphasised that his impact on children continues to inspire and elevate him.
“I think I have been a blessing to myself. I’m proud of myself, and I also believe that the children I serve give me a bigger platform to shine,” he said.
“I have been all over the world because of the stories of the children,” he added. “While touching their lives, I feel I am also being elevated, and that makes me very humble and proud.”
He recounted a life-changing moment as a Level 200 student at the University of Ghana, shortly after losing his mother and sister within two months, when he returned to Lake Volta to work.
“There was this boy sitting quietly on a rock then slowly, he asked me, ‘How did you escape?’”
“Basically, the boy wanted to know how I escaped so he could also use the same path,” Annan said.
“Every time I feel tired, I remember that question ‘How did you escape?’ and it keeps me going. That is why, even after 21 years, I continue this work without getting tired or worn out.”
