As for this week dier… what hasn't happened in it?
Me naa, from Monday morning, I knew it was going to be a memorable 5 days when COP Dr Dampare, Director General of the Ghana Police Service in charge of Finance and Patrols stopped by to set the record straight about the indictment of his colleague, COP Timbillah (who happens to be the Director General in charge of Human Resources) in the ongoing Police Recruitment scam. Turns out it was unlawful to put him under house arrest, so that had been revoked.
We also learnt about the intricate nine-team recruitment system introduced by the IGP to ensure that this scam can never happen again. Seems the nation's top cop played his cards pretty close to his chest with this one. Even Timbillah may not have known all the details, which, is why his alleged involvement in the scam was uncovered. So does this mean the IGP didn't trust his Director General of HR all along?
Tuesday was another controversial day. The NPP had just read their "True State of the Nation Address", and Deputy Power Minister, John Jinapor came head to head in the studio with the Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul in the Battle of the Addresses. They fought over figures, quibbled over quantities, duelled over dumsor, cavilled over corruption, squabbled over solutions, and in the end, did absolutely nothing to improve our lot as a nation. Jinapor insisted there wasn't a problem, and Nitiwul insisted there was a problem, but offered no solutions. Nothing new there from either party.
On Wednesday, we all woke up to the disturbing news that, not only had Dr Afari-Gyan's Electoral Commission blown 317 million Ghana cedis on the abortive District Assembly elections, but they wanted 90 million more to do it all again sometime in July. This is what happens when you rush aa until you tsii. Now you and I will foot the bill on top of all the economic hardships and reviewed budget and IMF wahala. Nothing new there either.
And then yesterday, something new happened. The President, in a spectacularly inspired moment, declared that he had a curious condition called Dead Goat Syndrome. Much mirth and Jollity ensued across the nation as joke after hilarious joke about dead goats made the rounds on social media. Naturally, since he is our president too, we were duty-bound to contribute a solid hour of good-natured presidential ribbing to the national discourse. Yeah, it was fun.
But some people felt that we ought to take the whole thing very seriously. One of our callers even asked me to stop making fun of the President and rather explain what he actually meant by "Dead Goat Syndrome". Ok then, let me try: The President said he expects lots of strikes and demos in the election year, as people expect him to give in to their demands in exchange for votes. He said considering the number of demos he had already faced, he was now immune to the pressure of agitating citizens.
He compared how he feels about the demands of demonstrating Ghanaians to how a dead goat feels about knives. So basically, what he was saying is that Ghanaians can demonstrate 'til the cows come home, he doesn't give a toss either way. There you go, Mr Caller from yesterday. I hope that's an adequate translation.
Ando so now it's Friday, and of course Woyome is the talk of the town. The high court acquitted him on all counts in the criminal case brought by the attorney general against the man who walked away with GHC51 million of our hard cash in a deal that nobody quite understands. So was it simply down to an abject crisis of competence at the AG's office, or is there a deeper conspiracy at play here? There's only one place where the answers will be revealed. So you know what to do, don't you? Absolutely nothing. Just keep listening.
My name is Kojo Yankson, and it's been One for the Record Books.
Good Morning, GHANAFO!
